Harriet
Quimby (1875 – 1912) is perhaps best known for being the first person to fly
across the English Channel from France to England. Unfortunately, she never
received the publicity she deserved because the Titanic sank the same day, and
grabbed most of the headlines. She was also a journalist, theater critic and the
first licensed Aviatrix in the United States. She was killed later the same year
when she fell out of her airplane while performing at an air show in
Massachusetts, when she fell out of her airplane, because she wasn't wearing a
seat belt. Louis Bleriot (172- 1936) was the first person to fly across the
English Channel on July 25, 1909 when he flew from France to England. He has
been honored on stamps issued by several nations.
